I read this as a follow-up to the more recent Zep biography "When Giants Walked the Earth", and I was not disappointed. Both books are excellent and cover additional/different material. Entertaining and interesting. The material on the 1960's British rock scene was especially insightful. I read "Hammer of the Gods" when it first came out in the early 80s, well after Led Zeppelin broke up and somewhere between Robert Plant's solo MTV success and The Firm. At that time, a history of Led Zep was already long overdue. During the 70s, they were one of the biggest bands, if not THE biggest band, active in the US. It gives detailed explanations of any problems you may encounter in learning German and quite often really useful tips at how to simplify things. Words cannot describe the awesomeness that is this book. Mr. Durrell's masterpiece demands superlatives. It was about the third time I read the book before I realized that everything is written in the present tense. Modesitt also doesn't take the time to explain the broken dialog, the half thoughts of the characters, nor does he provide background for the characters.
