Summary: and the hammer fell.
... Want a book to drag you down? This is it. An apocalypse that man is powerless to prevent. This is a story of a comet striking earth and the aftermath for humanity. It starts well in advance with the discovery of the Hamner-Brown comet. Sometimes the timing is a little suspect. I mean the government is able to throw together a mission to space that is a joint mission with the Russians in only a couple of months. Overall, It was a great read and was exciting from start to finish. Good luck to the human race.

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known.... "Massively entertaining."

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-11 Summary: Another great book from Marcus Hearn ... This book would be worth it if only for the photos, but the "stories" for each of the glammour girls is equally facinating. One complaint: Where's "Hands of the Ripper"'s Jane Merrow? ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-04 Summary: They Don't Make 'Em Like This Anymore ... What do you think of when you think of Hammer Horror films? Here is at any rate what comes to my semi-educated mind: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, scary laboratories, spooky castles, crosses, relics, "German" peasants who speak Cockney, great period clothing, terrible period sets, horrible murders, gallons of Technicolor blood...and hot women in nightdress showing lots of cleavage. It is to this last category that HAMMER GLAMOUR is addressed. Because let's face it, friends and neighbors, ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-19 Summary: I Loved It ... As one who greatly enjoyed Hammer's films growing up, I greatly enjoyed this book as well as Marcus Hearn's other book on Hammer films. I've met several of the women featured in this book: Caroline Munro, Madeline Smith, Martine Beswicke, the late, wonderful Hazel Court and my favorite, Ingrid Pitt. It was so nice reading about them here as well as so many others. I particularly liked learning more about the beautiful, classy Barbara Shelley, whose beautiful picture adrorns the back cover of this book. The one sad ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-16 Summary: Male Hammer Fans, Rejoice! ... Since the readership for this particular volume is likely a specialized one (see my review title if this demographic still eludes you), I'll refrain from general praise for Hammer itself and assume that I'm preaching to the converted. So, to the male Hammer devotee, stop wasting time reading this review and buy this book! This presentation and the pictures within are top-caliber, glamorous and sexy without being trashy. There is also plenty of interesting info on your favorite starlets, which should satisfy the curiosity ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Over fifty years ago, with the release of The Curse of Frankenstein and Christopher Lee in Dracula , Hammer ushered in a whole new era of blood and barely restrained cleavage in glorious colour, mixing sex and horror with a style and panache that made the small British company world famous. Bursting at the seams with rare and previously unpublished photographs from Hammer’s archive and private collections worldwide, and featuring many new interviews, Hammer Glamour is a lavish, full...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-07 Summary: Mechanized warfare in the far future ... This is the first in a three volume compilation of all the Hammer's Slammers stories (short stories, novellas, and novels) written by David Drake. Hammer's Slammers is a fictional mercenary armored regiment that is hired out by various organizations, planetary governments, commercial interests, etc. to fight their battles. The Slammers typically provide the mobile muscle for any indigenous forces and have proven decisive in a large number of campaigns. The unit's name is derived from that of its commander/owner, Alois ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-17 Summary: More of a Best Of than Complete ... I actually bought the e-book directly from Baen, and was hoping that it would contain all of his stories. However, I was mildly disappointed to find that it was more of a "Best Of" than the "Complete" Hammer's Slammers, especially since many of the early books like The Warrior is out of print. That said, I am really enjoying reading some stories that I haven't read in many many moons. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | With a veteran’s eye for the harsh and gritty details of war, David Drake depicts a futuristic analog of tank combat in his Hammer’s Slammers fiction. The Slammers are neither cartoon heroes nor propaganda villains; rather they are competent professionals engaged in a deadly business. The inevitable conflicts between policy, necessity, and human nature make Drake’s Slammers fiction instantly identifiable and utterly compelling. This is the first of a three volume set presenting for...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-18 Summary: I love Hammer's Slammers. ... I collected all the individual books in the Hammer's Slammers series. When the consolidated collection came out I bought them, too. I enjoy the action, and the insight into the military mind-set. I also like the fact that the Slammers always win, although often at considerable cost. It is salutary to consider the collateral damage, in material destroyed, people killed and ecology harmed. ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-08-05 Summary: The Grand Old Party ... This is a first-rate history of the Communist Party and its fellow-travelers in Alabama during the depression. It describes the Party during the "third period" and the popular front era. While it does not discuss the ulterior motives of the Party in any great detail, it does help to establish the positive role of the Communists in the prehistory of the civil rights movement. It also gives glimpses of the life in the Party in Alabama including Communist songs sung to the tune of spirituals, and African-American Young ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2000-12-17 Summary: A powerful venture in American history ... Kelley has produced a powerful and startling history of the deep south in the 1930s. He tackles a difficult subject both historically and ideologically (the relationship between poor black sharecroppers and the American Communist party). His tireless efforts at writing this book shine out of the pages unquestionably as does his deep, thoughtful intelligence. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in subversive U.S. history or just in a good read. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 1999-02-15 Summary: Excellent. HIghly Infoormative and Insightfuul. ... This book is great, it undermines the conventional treatments of afro-american history and although it is focused in the south it takes a genuine look at the struggle to free the shackles from Afro-americans and lift the blanket of opressions. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Between 1929 and 1941, the Communist Party organized and led a radical, militantly antiracist movement in Alabama—the center of Party activity in the Depression South. Hammer and Hoe documents the efforts of the Alabama Communist Party and its allies to secure racial, economic, and political reforms. Sensitive to the complexities of gender, race, culture and class without compromising the political narrative, Robin Kelley illustrates one of the most unique and least understood radical...more
