Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-05-14 Summary: A-1 Biography of a 1970's Legendary Band ... I read this as a follow-up to the more recent Zep biography "When Giants Walked the Earth", and I was not disappointed. Both books are excellent and cover additional/different material. Entertaining and interesting. The material on the 1960's British rock scene was especially insightful. I hadn't realized that the major acts of that time that would grow to become legends had so much interaction and friendship i.e., the Stones, the Who, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-15 Summary: Gets points for being the first book on this seminal band ... I read "Hammer of the Gods" when it first came out in the early 80s, well after Led Zeppelin broke up and somewhere between Robert Plant's solo MTV success and The Firm. At that time, a history of Led Zep was already long overdue. During the 70s, they were one of the biggest bands, if not THE biggest band, active in the US. I grew up in the Midwest in the 70s, and every guitar player of my generation was influenced in some way by Zeppelin, regardless of what style he ended up playing (yes, even the punk rockers). Nowadays ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-08-21 Summary: Rock Gods For Sure! ... Love this band they can do no wrong in my eyes. Definately the best heavy rock band ever. There will never be another Jimmy or Robert, the combination was magic. Loved the book hard to put it down, very raw! ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The members of Led Zeppelin are major deities in the pantheon of rock gods. The first and heaviest of the heavy metal monsters, they violently shook the foundations of rock music and took no prisoners on the road. Their tours were legendary, their lives were exalted—and in an era well known for sex and drugs, the mighty Zeppelin set an unattainable standard of excess and mythos for any band that tried to follow them. They were power, they were fantasy, they were black magic. No band...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-07-19 Summary: A trip to a simpler time ... It's been 50 years since I first read these three books. I feel like an anthropologist rereading them today - 25 cents for a "deck of Luckies", change back from a dollar at a saloon, 5 cents for a local call on a pay phone, engaging a car's starter with your foot, a reporter's typewriter referred to as a "mill", elevator operators, and parking on the street in Manhattan. There is not a single word that would offend the FCC, but there is also little regard for the sensitivities of African-Americans or gays. That said, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-11 Summary: The only thing a punk understands is a crack on the jaw with the barrel of a forty-five ... This set (and it's companion volume) really represent Spillane and Hammer at their hard-bitten best. It took literally decades for Spillane to get the respect he always deserved (but couldn't have cared less about) for his creation. Frankly, Hammer deserves a place on the same plateau as Marlowe and Spade. From the cold blooded "It was easy" to the shocking "Juno was a..." Take a walk on the wild side and rain swept NY back alleys with the Hammer. It's dark and dangerous, but you will never regret it. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more

I Had a Hammer: The Hank Aaron Story
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-06 Summary: The life of Aaron is the story of the integration of baseball and great changes in America that were for the better ... When the subject of the integration of baseball is raised, the focus is almost exclusively on Jackie Robinson. While his role cannot be overstated, it does overshadow the difficulties that the second wave of black players had, of which Hank Aaron was one. Most of these players began in the old Negro leagues and then were given the chance to play in the major leagues after Jackie's success. Aaron was one of those players and he was also one of the black players that integrated one of the minor leagues based in the south. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-29 Summary: Arnold Palmer written by James Dodson ... James Dodson does a great job in this book as in all of his books. Takes time to get the details correct. Nice book on a very nice person Arnold Palmer. Carl Welty ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-08-13 Summary: Still the greatest home run hitter ever. ... It doesn't matter how many home runs Berry Bond's or anyone of this aera of Baseball, what Hank AAron endured and the racial hatred he went through only proves that he is the BEST. These modern day players could not survive what he and others went through. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-07-04 Summary: Mr Aaron is a very humble, decent man ... I've been a fan from age seven, which is where I was in life when Henry hit number 715. His recounting of his life in baseball is captivating and highly educational. Mr Aaron is one of the most skilled players in baseball history, and his telling of his story explains that he is much more than that. Mr Aaron is a man of dignity and class, his success through clouds of racist hate provides a shining example of what a man can be under extreme circumstances. Thank you Henry, for your marvelous career in baseball, and ...more

The Complete Hammer's Slammers: Volume I
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-07 Summary: Mechanized warfare in the far future ... This is the first in a three volume compilation of all the Hammer's Slammers stories (short stories, novellas, and novels) written by David Drake. Hammer's Slammers is a fictional mercenary armored regiment that is hired out by various organizations, planetary governments, commercial interests, etc. to fight their battles. The Slammers typically provide the mobile muscle for any indigenous forces and have proven decisive in a large number of campaigns. The unit's name is derived from that of its commander/owner, Alois ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-17 Summary: More of a Best Of than Complete ... I actually bought the e-book directly from Baen, and was hoping that it would contain all of his stories. However, I was mildly disappointed to find that it was more of a "Best Of" than the "Complete" Hammer's Slammers, especially since many of the early books like The Warrior is out of print. That said, I am really enjoying reading some stories that I haven't read in many many moons. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | With a veteran’s eye for the harsh and gritty details of war, David Drake depicts a futuristic analog of tank combat in his Hammer’s Slammers fiction. The Slammers are neither cartoon heroes nor propaganda villains; rather they are competent professionals engaged in a deadly business. The inevitable conflicts between policy, necessity, and human nature make Drake’s Slammers fiction instantly identifiable and utterly compelling. This is the first of a three volume set presenting for...more
