Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-06-13 Summary: Vols fan ... I absolutely love this book. Whenever I get in a down mood, I will pick this book up and read a couple chapters. It is hysterical, especially if you understand what SEC football is all about. I have bought this book and given it as a gift for other SEC fans. Love it!!!!! ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-27 Summary: Absolutely entertaining!! ... As reader, this book is well written and very entertaining. And, as all good books, it has great insights into human nature. As a college football fan, it was enjoyable to read about fellow followers. And, as an Alabama fan, it was neat to read about Alabama football events that I followed and/or participated in. A must read for all Alabama fans. A great read for college football fans. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-23 Summary: Great read for any college football fan! ... I really enjoyed this read. However, I am a huge SEC college football fan. There were a few laugh-out-loud parts, and most of the book kept a good humurous pace. I would definitely recommend this book to any sports fan! ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-21 Summary: fans are nuts ... this is an interesting study of "fans". Mr St John chose to follow the fans of the Crimson Tide during one footbal season but he attempts to analyze "what is a fan"... he could have easily chosen a hockey team or even a famous performer. He did however convince me I NEVER want to go anywherein an RV. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care? In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: The Reeses, who...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-07-19 Summary: A trip to a simpler time ... It's been 50 years since I first read these three books. I feel like an anthropologist rereading them today - 25 cents for a "deck of Luckies", change back from a dollar at a saloon, 5 cents for a local call on a pay phone, engaging a car's starter with your foot, a reporter's typewriter referred to as a "mill", elevator operators, and parking on the street in Manhattan. There is not a single word that would offend the FCC, but there is also little regard for the sensitivities of African-Americans or gays. That said, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-11 Summary: The only thing a punk understands is a crack on the jaw with the barrel of a forty-five ... This set (and it's companion volume) really represent Spillane and Hammer at their hard-bitten best. It took literally decades for Spillane to get the respect he always deserved (but couldn't have cared less about) for his creation. Frankly, Hammer deserves a place on the same plateau as Marlowe and Spade. From the cold blooded "It was easy" to the shocking "Juno was a..." Take a walk on the wild side and rain swept NY back alleys with the Hammer. It's dark and dangerous, but you will never regret it. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | SEX AND VIOLENCE. Mickey Spillane, the tough-as-nails, bestselling publishing phenomenon knew what readers wanted. Now he's really letting them have it...times three. MIKE HAMMER-Spillane's ultimate creation, the original no-holds-barred private eye who became homicide's hottest anti-hero. THE MIKE HAMMER COLLECTION, VOLUME 1-the first-ever trade anthology of Spillane's masterpieces of literary mayhem. In one exciting collection, here are the first three novels featuring legendary detective...more
The Complete Hammer's Slammers: Volume I
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-07 Summary: Mechanized warfare in the far future ... This is the first in a three volume compilation of all the Hammer's Slammers stories (short stories, novellas, and novels) written by David Drake. Hammer's Slammers is a fictional mercenary armored regiment that is hired out by various organizations, planetary governments, commercial interests, etc. to fight their battles. The Slammers typically provide the mobile muscle for any indigenous forces and have proven decisive in a large number of campaigns. The unit's name is derived from that of its commander/owner, Alois ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-17 Summary: More of a Best Of than Complete ... I actually bought the e-book directly from Baen, and was hoping that it would contain all of his stories. However, I was mildly disappointed to find that it was more of a "Best Of" than the "Complete" Hammer's Slammers, especially since many of the early books like The Warrior is out of print. That said, I am really enjoying reading some stories that I haven't read in many many moons. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | With a veteran’s eye for the harsh and gritty details of war, David Drake depicts a futuristic analog of tank combat in his Hammer’s Slammers fiction. The Slammers are neither cartoon heroes nor propaganda villains; rather they are competent professionals engaged in a deadly business. The inevitable conflicts between policy, necessity, and human nature make Drake’s Slammers fiction instantly identifiable and utterly compelling. This is the first of a three volume set presenting for...more
The Hammer and the Cross
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-07-13 Summary: Superb ... Yes, superb. For boys of all ages. Well, perhaps the more manly, fourteen and older, because it is, as others have pointed out, somewhat brutal. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-06-20 Summary: Humans & Gods Get Mingled. ... This alternate history tale is full of attractive ideas, images and characters. A very well documented background reveals Harrison's researches. The novel shows how myths are created: the chosen Hero, rising from an obscure corner and going step by step on the path Gods or Destiny had forged for him. At the same time, Shef is not a puppet in their hands, his humanity is present, he is free to choose and he does so, not without paying the price. The entire early middle age world is reconstructed accurately; its reality ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-03 Summary: A great start to the trilogy ... This was a great trilogy. I enjoyed Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat series, but that's a lighthearted, comedic series. It made these books quite a surprise. They follow the life of a boy named Shef and his impact on the medieval european world. It melds together vikings, english, romans, galls, germans, arabs, jews, and almost every people of that time. The series has a strong religions message that doesn't really come out in fullness until the end. Maybe I mean religious philosophy - it doesn't really endorse ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-01-20 Summary: Great, Excellent, Fantasic ... I normally dislike alternate history. But this proved that people can pull this genre off. If you come to this book looking for stories about the Norse gods you won't find them. Instead, you find an Englishman who falls in among Viking raiders . He meets a Way-man(i.e. Asatruar) who tells him about the Asier and Vanir (Norse gods). His life from that point is then touched by his patron god (can't say who, it will spoil the book). This is a grand story, filled with romance, action, adventure, mystery, and one suprise ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | 865 A.D. Warring kings rule over the British Isles, but the Church rules over the kings, threatening all who oppose them with damnation. Only the dreaded Vikings of Scandinavia do not fear the priests. Shef, the bastard son of a Norse raider and a captive English lady, is torn by divided loyalties and driven by strange visions that seem to come from Odin himself. A smith and warrior, he alone dares to imagine new weapons and tactics with which to carve out a kingdom--and launch an all-out...more
