[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-28 Summary: Good Collection of HAMMER'S SLAMMERS stories ... VOLUME TWO of THE COMPLETE HAMMER'S SLAMMERS is a good collection of novella sized stories, mostly from the late-80's. Following are individual reviews of each of the main stories: AT ANY PRICE (1985) **** - A breakthru story for its day... Military SciFi, with aliens. Drake's combat action dialog is hard to follow at times in this story, but still worth it. COUNTING THE COST (1987) *** - A Company of Hammer's Slammers (a spaceborne Mercenary Regiment) gets mixed up in the wranglings of a backwater world in political ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-07-19 Summary: A trip to a simpler time ... It's been 50 years since I first read these three books. I feel like an anthropologist rereading them today - 25 cents for a "deck of Luckies", change back from a dollar at a saloon, 5 cents for a local call on a pay phone, engaging a car's starter with your foot, a reporter's typewriter referred to as a "mill", elevator operators, and parking on the street in Manhattan. There is not a single word that would offend the FCC, but there is also little regard for the sensitivities of African-Americans or gays. That said, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-07-09 Summary: The three that started it al..... ... I'm a big hard-boiled noir fan, and these are three of the stories that started it all. You can clearly see the heritage of Mickeys Spillane in Vachss Burke character, as another reviewed noted all the way down to the beat up car with the super powerful engine, and both in New Your city. All three were written between 1947 and 1950, so the dated slang, the homophobia, and the views of sex, and women are all interesting, and but the prose itself is outstanding. The first couple paragraphs of MY GUN IS QUICK are classic. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more

Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-07-10 Summary: The Ultimate Gamesman ... This is a fascinating story. I had read several of the lukewarm, pseudo-politically-correct news releases that were 'approved' by Hammer himself over the years, which is why I decided to look at this book. Once I picked it up, I could hardly put it down! This is the most amazing real-life story. It just goes to show that, in our culture, image is everything. The things that Hammer got away with will shock any well-read reader. The book reads like a thriller spy novel. Hammer was a master at his craft. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-06-02 Summary: Eye opener regarding our citizens and how it has affected our history. ... Condsidering everything that is going on in the country today, I recommend reading this book. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-05-22 Summary: Marxism is a de luxe product ... This book is a biography about an american oil mogul:Armand Hammer. The author is a jew, as the biographed. If you read this book, you will see a true:marxism(leftism, eugenicism, environmentalism, feminism, etc.) is something for millionaries. Hammer got a fortune linking to former Soviet Union's interests. Then he went to oil business.Again he linked his oil business to Lybia, even to Khadafy money. Defects of this book are small.I don't believe ,that Al Gore had school's payment from Hammer.Another problem,of this ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2006-04-20 Summary: If only he had done the opposite ... Mr. Epstein places a great work on to the life of Armand Hammer. Many individuals wonder how such a man, whom was red flagged by the CIA, could remain connected to each and every Presidential administration and Kremlin since the days of Lenin. I was hoping for more information on their dealings with Robert Maxwell but it was only mentioned in brief. Hammer, like is father, presented to the public as immensely wealthy and powerful individuals, yet reality had dictated the opposite. Hammer, a man in quest for power, ...more
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Product Description | When Armand Hammer died at the age of 92, he was chairman of the Occidental Petroleum Company, lauded for his financial support of cancer research and for his art collection. But behind the facade of respectability lay a lifetime of fraud, both personal and professional. Now, the bestselling author of The Assassination Chronicles reveals the true story of this manipulative and corrupt man. of photos....more
[2] ... Review | It comes as little surprise that Armand Hammer, the chairman and tyrant of Occidental Petroleum who molded himself into a modern Medici, was a philanderer, a sycophant to American Presidents and Soviet leaders alike, and an avid art collector who cared not a fig for art. The surprises in this absorbing biography by Edward Jay Epstein, with Armand Hammer, come from long-buried sources: that Hammer financed Soviet espionage in the United States, that he forced his long-time mistress to change her appearance...more
The Hammer of Eden
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-01-15 Summary: excellent - suspenseful ... I had purchased this audio book at my local library. One of the cassettes was missing. I scrambled to find a 'whole book' - It was suspenseful. There was alot of geological accuracies that pleased me. And the story line I thought was compelling. This is the book that got me started reading anything I could find by Ken Follett. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-10-14 Summary: Good Read ... This book might have plot holes but it is page turning and really gets you into the lives of the characters. I have fun reading this story. It is not Follett's best novel but it is good. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-01-03 Summary: Ken Follett - hammer of Eden ... A very interesting, and quite novel, approach to mystery writing. Ken Follet is one of my favorite authors who never fails to create interesting characters, establish great tension and suspense, and leave you with a few surprises. This was a very interesting read. ...more

[2] ... Review | The tension ratchets up quickly in this abridged reading of Ken Follett's thriller. Actor Anthony Heald--a movie ( The Client , The Silence of the Lambs ) and audiobook ( Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ) veteran--uses a breathy, urgent delivery to spin the tale of ecoterrorist cultists and the unlikely heroes who must stop them before they hammer California with a major man-made earthquake. Follett has real contempt for his aging-hippie villains, which Heald gleefully communicates through...more
