Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-05-31 Summary: THE HAMMER BEAUTIES ... In the 1950s, the Hammer Studios literally revived the horror genre with modern takes on Frankenstein, Dracula, and the mummy. The studio made stars out of actors Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Besides producing some of the best horror films of the 50s and 60s, Hammer was also noted for the many gorgeous actresses who starred in the films. These ranged from women making their film debuts to established screen stars. The entries feature biographical information about each actress, career highlights, information ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-04-04 Summary: a must have ... i remember seeing my first "hammer" film on late night tv at about age 9 and learning that i'm really really attracted to women and terrified of vampires. This book is really well produced with informative commentary and great photos. A must have for film buffs. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-03-16 Summary: Beautifully presented and superbly organized ... An icon of B movie productions, Britain's Hammer Studios turned out some of the best horror genre flicks the 1950s and early 1960s had to offer. Especially their vampire films which continue to be popular late night television fare. A mainstay of their enduring entertainment value was the veritable bevy of beautiful (and often scantily clad) actresses. Now Marcus Hearn has gone into the Hammer archives and assembled a 160-page compendium of photographs showcasing these women whose contributions on screen gave Hammer ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-11 Summary: Another great book from Marcus Hearn ... This book would be worth it if only for the photos, but the "stories" for each of the glammour girls is equally facinating. One complaint: Where's "Hands of the Ripper"'s Jane Merrow? ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Over fifty years ago, with the release of The Curse of Frankenstein and Christopher Lee in Dracula , Hammer ushered in a whole new era of blood and barely restrained cleavage in glorious colour, mixing sex and horror with a style and panache that made the small British company world famous. Bursting at the seams with rare and previously unpublished photographs from Hammer’s archive and private collections worldwide, and featuring many new interviews, Hammer Glamour is a lavish, full...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-07-19 Summary: A trip to a simpler time ... It's been 50 years since I first read these three books. I feel like an anthropologist rereading them today - 25 cents for a "deck of Luckies", change back from a dollar at a saloon, 5 cents for a local call on a pay phone, engaging a car's starter with your foot, a reporter's typewriter referred to as a "mill", elevator operators, and parking on the street in Manhattan. There is not a single word that would offend the FCC, but there is also little regard for the sensitivities of African-Americans or gays. That said, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-11 Summary: The only thing a punk understands is a crack on the jaw with the barrel of a forty-five ... This set (and it's companion volume) really represent Spillane and Hammer at their hard-bitten best. It took literally decades for Spillane to get the respect he always deserved (but couldn't have cared less about) for his creation. Frankly, Hammer deserves a place on the same plateau as Marlowe and Spade. From the cold blooded "It was easy" to the shocking "Juno was a..." Take a walk on the wild side and rain swept NY back alleys with the Hammer. It's dark and dangerous, but you will never regret it. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | SEX AND VIOLENCE. Mickey Spillane, the tough-as-nails, bestselling publishing phenomenon knew what readers wanted. Now he's really letting them have it...times three. MIKE HAMMER-Spillane's ultimate creation, the original no-holds-barred private eye who became homicide's hottest anti-hero. THE MIKE HAMMER COLLECTION, VOLUME 1-the first-ever trade anthology of Spillane's masterpieces of literary mayhem. In one exciting collection, here are the first three novels featuring legendary detective...more
The Hammer Story
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-18 Summary: Excellent Overview ... I am not normally a fan of "coffee table" books. But, in this case, I am happy to make an exception. In this large volume, the editors essentially try to tell the story of Hammer Studios, the movie production company that went from obscurity to legend in the genre of horror and suspense. It is, as other reviews quite correctly point out, not complete, so it cannot be called a full history. But, I still give it five stars for superb editing, superior physical construction and layout, and the synposes of most of Hammer's ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-11-18 Summary: The Haunted House That Hammer Built ... Alan Barnes and Marcus Hearn's THE HAMMER STORY is an exhaustive historical study of the horror films produced by Britain's Hammer Studios from the 1950s to the 1970s. For each film, the book offers a story synopsis, production history, and a discussion of critical and popular reaction. Also, the book includes a short history of the studio itself and information on those who helmed and shaped it over the years, and short biographies of some of the stars, screenwriters, and directors of various films are scattered throughout. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-07-21 Summary: Stylish Yet Incomplete Survey of Hammer ... First off, Titan Books should be commended for producing a very attractive, informative volume with lots of great photos concerning the history of Hammer Studios. The key films are discussed in depth, usually with two pages devoted to behind-the-scenes info regarding all your favorites. My one quibble would be with what the book isn't -- this is not a comprehensive survey of Hammer's entire output. The b&w thrillers are glossed over as are the comedies, the swashbucklers and the forgotten noirs. All well and good if ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-06-27 Summary: Long, Live Hammer Films ... This book has everything you would want to know about Hammer Studios, great artwork, wonderful summaries and much more. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Fifty years ago, Hammer Films released The Curse of Frankenstein. The now-legendary British company went on to make such classics as Dracula (and its many sequels), making international stars out of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, changing the face of horror cinema, and inspiring a generation of Hollywood filmmakers, including George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Now, for the first time, Hammer have given their active backing to an authorised history of the company, and have...more
