I read "Hammer of the Gods" when it first came out in the early 80s, well after Led Zeppelin broke up and somewhere between Robert Plant's solo MTV success and The Firm. At that time, a history of Led Zep was already long overdue. During the 70s, they were one of the biggest bands, if not THE biggest band, active in the US. I grew up in the Midwest in the 70s, and every guitar player of my generation was influenced in some way by Zeppelin, regardless of what style he ended up playing (yes, even the punk rockers).
