Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga
Feature: ... ISBN13: 9780061473081; Condition: NEW; Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark. ...more
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-15 Summary: Gets points for being the first book on this seminal band ... I read "Hammer of the Gods" when it first came out in the early 80s, well after Led Zeppelin broke up and somewhere between Robert Plant's solo MTV success and The Firm. At that time, a history of Led Zep was already long overdue. During the 70s, they were one of the biggest bands, if not THE biggest band, active in the US. I grew up in the Midwest in the 70s, and every guitar player of my generation was influenced in some way by Zeppelin, regardless of what style he ended up playing (yes, even the punk rockers). Nowadays ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-08-21 Summary: Rock Gods For Sure! ... Love this band they can do no wrong in my eyes. Definately the best heavy rock band ever. There will never be another Jimmy or Robert, the combination was magic. Loved the book hard to put it down, very raw! ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-08-17 Summary: A Tale of Excess, but not too excessive ... This is a well written book and an easy read. I have read many other rock n roll bio's and this one stacks up as follows: Drugs: Cocaine, some heroin. Anecdotes are the best- no real withdrawl or scoring stories, minimal arrest tales. Sex: Some teenage type perversity, nothing really sick. Some pedophila suggested. Groupie talk is OK, but nothing really shocking. Rock n Roll: The best part of the book. Learning about the professional history of the band and some personal history. Great to know the origins of some of ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The members of Led Zeppelin are major deities in the pantheon of rock gods. The first and heaviest of the heavy metal monsters, they violently shook the foundations of rock music and took no prisoners on the road. Their tours were legendary, their lives were exalted—and in an era well known for sex and drugs, the mighty Zeppelin set an unattainable standard of excess and mythos for any band that tried to follow them. They were power, they were fantasy, they were black magic. No band...more
The Mike Hammer Collection Volume 1
Feature: ... ISBN13: 9780451203526; Condition: NEW; Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark. ...more
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-11 Summary: The only thing a punk understands is a crack on the jaw with the barrel of a forty-five ... This set (and it's companion volume) really represent Spillane and Hammer at their hard-bitten best. It took literally decades for Spillane to get the respect he always deserved (but couldn't have cared less about) for his creation. Frankly, Hammer deserves a place on the same plateau as Marlowe and Spade. From the cold blooded "It was easy" to the shocking "Juno was a..." Take a walk on the wild side and rain swept NY back alleys with the Hammer. It's dark and dangerous, but you will never regret it. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-24 Summary: "It Was Easy." (No, it only looks that way) ... Back in the day when I was teaching university literature courses, I would annually shock some English department colleagues by suggesting to students that Raymond Chandler was a better writer than F. Scott Fitzgerald. I smile to think of their reactions today if I were teaching a course in American literature, in which I would spend serious time reading and discussing Mickey Spillane and his unforgettable character, Mike Hammer. Spillane was never a trickster or sensationalist. He was a hard worker and a born storyteller ...more

Grace Hammer: A Novel of the Victorian Underworld
Feature: ... ISBN13: 9780393067187; Condition: NEW; Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark. ...more
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-30 Summary: quick, witty, and enjoyable ... This may be the first book I've read which referenced the Ripper murders that didn't annoy me. The weird irony of this book is that the Ripper murders are going on and our Heroine, Grace, considers them a tabloid annoyance, wrapped as she is in her own problems. I'll save you the suspense: none of the characters named in the book are the Ripper. It's just a contemporary event that Stockbridge threw in there to lend verisimilitude. Now that that's out of the way, Grace Hammer is a cool, collected lady who knows what ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-09-19 Summary: A Spoon Full of Sugar to Help the Medicine Go Down ... There are a few books which I can say that the negatives and the positives are in almost complete balance. Grace Hammer: A Novel of the Victorian Underworld is, for better or worse, one of those books. Sara Stockbridge's writing reminds me, in some ways, of Victorian writers . . . full of complex sentences, an intimate narrator, and lengthy, blow-by-blow scenic descriptions. The problem is, however, that the complex sentences are often needlessly so and, although complex they are not always well-written; the intimate ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-09-16 Summary: "What she was stealing: a deadly thing, a burden and a curse." ... Grace Hammer is a very unusual Victorian heroine, a jewel among the unpolished stones of late 19th century London, particularly in the East End, where streetwalkers rub elbows with pickpockets and reprobates of every ilk, where vice is profitable and life is cheap. Grace has made a niche for herself in this aberrant society; a thief, she has created a comfortable home for four children (by different fathers), a natural survivor ever on the lookout for opportunity. Unfortunately, Grace's past is just as checkered as ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | An engrossing suspense novel set in Victorian London—about stolen fortunes, romance, murder, and revenge. Whitechapel, 1888. Grace Hammer and her children live comfortably in Bell Lane, their home a little oasis in the squalor of London’s East End. They make their living picking the pockets of wealthy strangers foolish enough to venture there. But Grace’s history is about to catch up with her. Out in the countryside Mr. Blunt rocks in his chair, vowing furious retribution. He has...more
Hammer Films: The Bray Studio Years
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-08-17 Summary: The first half of the essential Hammer reference ... Wayne Kinsey's books on Hammer Films (The Bray Studios Years and The Elstree Studios Years) together form the essential reference on the short-lived British studio that brought us the greatest horror films of the 60's and 70's. The books are well-researched and packed with behind-the-scenes stories and photos. If you love Hammer, you need to own these books. I was under the impression that the first volume, Hammer Films: The Bray Studios Years, was out of print, because I had tried ordering it from several online dealers ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2004-06-27 Summary: Fascinating and essential ... I haven't put this book down since I first picked it up six months ago. Kinsey's history of Hammer's Bray years (i.e. until 1967) is full of fascinating details I have not encountered elsewhere. He really manages to inspire an affection and enthusiasm for both the films and the Bray studios themselves. By far the best section, and the reason I keep returning to the book, is the multi-page illustrated tour through the history of Bray's backlot, packed with rarely seen photos of Hammer's most memorable sets. Essential ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2004-06-06 Summary: A good try but not enough new and interesting material ... Who doesn't love Hammer Films? The author, Wayne Kinsey, a true fan, has devoted this book to the classic Hammer Years, at Bray Studio, a veritable Shangri-La, or mythical place, only this was real. On this lot Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and dozens more gave their finest performances in a variety of monster, slasher, terror, sci-fi and less easily classifiable films, for a parade of studio execs who sometimes resembled a kind of family--ever the more so in retrospect. Kinsey presents a film by film breakdown, in ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Hammer Films was one of the most successful independent production companies of the 1950s and 60s. The company's movies conquered box offices around the world, but the movies it produced during this era were all produced at the same modest facility near Windsor, in the English Home Counties. Acclaimed Hammer expert Wayne Kinsey has gained exclusive access to production files and censor reports, and conducted numerous interviews during many years of research. The result is a definitive...more
