Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-05 Summary: Remembering Michael Hammer ... In a new world of more abundant capital, deregulated markets, freer trade and, most especially, inexpensive computing and communication, economies of scale and scope were being redefined. Hammer saw that yesterday's competitive yardsticks were no longer meaningful and that businesses needed to start managing themselves relative to their new potential, not just against their historical performance. See [...] ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-07 Summary: A must read for all managers and consultants ... One of the reviews for this book mentioned that it would be better to read anything by Alfred Chandler than read this book. As I recall, Afred Chandler recommended that structure follow strategy (or was it the other way around). One of the nice insights in Hammer and Champy's Reengineering the Corporation is that structure should follow process. That is, first figure out how to do business well, then assemble the people and formal systems to make it happen. Michael Porter was on to this concept, of course, in his 1996 ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-29 Summary: Important Read ... The title might suggest that this one would be a bit of a sleeper. Not so. Somehow the authors managed to make it an enjoyable read. It's surprisingly straightforward. It starts out explaining a problem - i.e. companies are not designed properly. Decades ago, efficiency was achieved through the division of labor -by thin-slicing tasks into meaningless activities. Bloated bureaucracies were required to manage all the disparate parts/functions. It worked fine back then, but not any more. The customer has more say now, ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-08-01 Summary: A must-read book ... It's sometimes difficult to find good managerial books that are based on more than pure management theories. This book is an exception. A must read piece of art crafted by people with feet deeply planted into the real way of doing things at corporations. This book strains people's brain in the sense that they feel compelled to think about what is going on at work heading for a better company through reengineering established processes. Specially for me, this book also brings hope, hope that no matter how critical some ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-07 Summary: Mechanized warfare in the far future ... This is the first in a three volume compilation of all the Hammer's Slammers stories (short stories, novellas, and novels) written by David Drake. Hammer's Slammers is a fictional mercenary armored regiment that is hired out by various organizations, planetary governments, commercial interests, etc. to fight their battles. The Slammers typically provide the mobile muscle for any indigenous forces and have proven decisive in a large number of campaigns. The unit's name is derived from that of its commander/owner, Alois ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-17 Summary: More of a Best Of than Complete ... I actually bought the e-book directly from Baen, and was hoping that it would contain all of his stories. However, I was mildly disappointed to find that it was more of a "Best Of" than the "Complete" Hammer's Slammers, especially since many of the early books like The Warrior is out of print. That said, I am really enjoying reading some stories that I haven't read in many many moons. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | With a veteran’s eye for the harsh and gritty details of war, David Drake depicts a futuristic analog of tank combat in his Hammer’s Slammers fiction. The Slammers are neither cartoon heroes nor propaganda villains; rather they are competent professionals engaged in a deadly business. The inevitable conflicts between policy, necessity, and human nature make Drake’s Slammers fiction instantly identifiable and utterly compelling. This is the first of a three volume set presenting for...more
Under the Grammar Hammer
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-11-10 Summary: a dreamy boy's view of grammar ... Mr. Cazort was apparently never one for rules. This is evident in his approach to grammar [and other things, it seems]. Though dry in spots, he unleashes his wetness in some of the later chapters. This book is for beginners and professionals alike when you want to know if it sounds "write." Never "hard core," often "old corps," this is sound advice from a real master of the genre. ...more

[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2000-06-15 Summary: Grammar for Students and New Teachers ... The humor, cartoons, and folksy style of this book make it easy to read and study. Highly useful for helping teachers to learn the grammar they most need in order to help students learn to edit for these twenty "most important" grammar mistakes, the book is great for student use, too. It includes a reassuring chapter titled "You Know More Grammar than You Know You Know, and You Need to Learn Less than you Think." The last chapter recommends "America Lighten Up." ...more
