Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer: A Road Trip into the Heart of Fan Mania
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-27 Summary: Absolutely entertaining!! ... As reader, this book is well written and very entertaining. And, as all good books, it has great insights into human nature. As a college football fan, it was enjoyable to read about fellow followers. And, as an Alabama fan, it was neat to read about Alabama football events that I followed and/or participated in. A must read for all Alabama fans. A great read for college football fans. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-21 Summary: fans are nuts ... this is an interesting study of "fans". Mr St John chose to follow the fans of the Crimson Tide during one footbal season but he attempts to analyze "what is a fan"... he could have easily chosen a hockey team or even a famous performer. He did however convince me I NEVER want to go anywherein an RV. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-21 Summary: Roll TIde, Ya'll! ... Loved it-this book captures what it is like to be a true fan of something, particularly a sports team. I read it out loud to my husband and we both laughed until we cried at some of the stories. These types of stories are repeated over and over all during football season all over the United States (we live in Arkansas and it is certainly true here in Razorback Country-the RVers call themselves the Road Hogs). Being born and raised a Bama fan, though, all the madness makes perfect sense to me and I must sheepishly admit ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-16 Summary: What a great read for any football fan ... I have read this book twice when a friend loaned me the book. Now that it's football season again. I wanted to again visit all the fun that attending an Alabama football game provides. The book is colorful and well written. I think it will only make you want to get to Tuscaloosa to see one live and feel the experience! ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care? In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: The Reeses, who...more

[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-28 Summary: Good Collection of HAMMER'S SLAMMERS stories ... VOLUME TWO of THE COMPLETE HAMMER'S SLAMMERS is a good collection of novella sized stories, mostly from the late-80's. Following are individual reviews of each of the main stories: AT ANY PRICE (1985) **** - A breakthru story for its day... Military SciFi, with aliens. Drake's combat action dialog is hard to follow at times in this story, but still worth it. COUNTING THE COST (1987) *** - A Company of Hammer's Slammers (a spaceborne Mercenary Regiment) gets mixed up in the wranglings of a backwater world in political ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Just get to the meat of the matter ... Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer collection is a must have for detective thrillers and nostalgia seekers alike. The lowest common denominator language unembellished with adjectives and adverbs is raw, urgent, harsh and cuts to the bone. Hammer is a hard drinking neanderthal with a nonstop libido. Maybe if people read more by writers like Spillane, they wouldn't believe the flowery garbage they see in print these days was so good. The first story dove straight into the fray. It is hard to put the volume down. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-11 Summary: The only thing a punk understands is a crack on the jaw with the barrel of a forty-five ... This set (and it's companion volume) really represent Spillane and Hammer at their hard-bitten best. It took literally decades for Spillane to get the respect he always deserved (but couldn't have cared less about) for his creation. Frankly, Hammer deserves a place on the same plateau as Marlowe and Spade. From the cold blooded "It was easy" to the shocking "Juno was a..." Take a walk on the wild side and rain swept NY back alleys with the Hammer. It's dark and dangerous, but you will never regret it. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-02-20 Summary: Down memory lane ... I loved these books when I was in High School. They were a big reason I became a private detective. But, they are a little dated for today. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane when everyone smoked, cars and starter buttons, and girls were dames. They are a wonderful look back into the 1950's. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-24 Summary: "It Was Easy." (No, it only looks that way) ... Back in the day when I was teaching university literature courses, I would annually shock some English department colleagues by suggesting to students that Raymond Chandler was a better writer than F. Scott Fitzgerald. I smile to think of their reactions today if I were teaching a course in American literature, in which I would spend serious time reading and discussing Mickey Spillane and his unforgettable character, Mike Hammer. Spillane was never a trickster or sensationalist. He was a hard worker and a born storyteller ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-10 Summary: Great Conclusion to a Good Story ... Karen Miller is a fine storyteller and this book is an exciting conclusion to the Godspeaker Trilogy. The first book of the three is in my opinion the slowest, but the other two more than make up. I really enjoyed all three. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-07-05 Summary: A Strong End to a Strong Series ... I carefully read and enjoyed the other two books in this trilogy, Empress and The Riven Kingdom, despite the many negative things written on this website about them. I think I came into this book with high expectations, therefore, and most of them were met. I would strongly recommend this book to a friend, and would convince people who are doubting the series after Empress (which seems to be the common path), to at least continue on to this book. Please be forewarned, if you continue to read this review, there will ...more
