Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | “What an amazingly inspirational book, filled with powerful stories and beautiful images. I truly love and recommend it. Thank you, Barbara Hammer!”—Sadie Benning , artist “Barbara Hammer’s genius is an erotic genius, one rich in intuitive intelligence. Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-08-05 Summary: The Grand Old Party ... This is a first-rate history of the Communist Party and its fellow-travelers in Alabama during the depression. It describes the Party during the "third period" and the popular front era. While it does not discuss the ulterior motives of the Party in any great detail, it does help to establish the positive role of the Communists in the prehistory of the civil rights movement. It also gives glimpses of the life in the Party in Alabama including Communist songs sung to the tune of spirituals, and African-American Young ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2000-12-17 Summary: A powerful venture in American history ... Kelley has produced a powerful and startling history of the deep south in the 1930s. He tackles a difficult subject both historically and ideologically (the relationship between poor black sharecroppers and the American Communist party). His tireless efforts at writing this book shine out of the pages unquestionably as does his deep, thoughtful intelligence. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in subversive U.S. history or just in a good read. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 1999-02-15 Summary: Excellent. HIghly Infoormative and Insightfuul. ... This book is great, it undermines the conventional treatments of afro-american history and although it is focused in the south it takes a genuine look at the struggle to free the shackles from Afro-americans and lift the blanket of opressions. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Between 1929 and 1941, the Communist Party organized and led a radical, militantly antiracist movement in Alabama—the center of Party activity in the Depression South. Hammer and Hoe documents the efforts of the Alabama Communist Party and its allies to secure racial, economic, and political reforms. Sensitive to the complexities of gender, race, culture and class without compromising the political narrative, Robin Kelley illustrates one of the most unique and least understood radical...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Q: Why, despite all the shortages, was the toilet paper in East Germany always two-ply? A: Because they had to send a copy of everything they did to Moscow. Communist jokes are the strangest, funniest, most enchanting and meaningful legacy of the eighty years of communism in Russia and Eastern Europe. The valiant and sardonic citizens of the former Communist countries—surrounded by secret police, threatened with arrest, imprisonment and forced labor, a failed economic system, and bombarded...more
The Hammer Story
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-18 Summary: Excellent Overview ... I am not normally a fan of "coffee table" books. But, in this case, I am happy to make an exception. In this large volume, the editors essentially try to tell the story of Hammer Studios, the movie production company that went from obscurity to legend in the genre of horror and suspense. It is, as other reviews quite correctly point out, not complete, so it cannot be called a full history. But, I still give it five stars for superb editing, superior physical construction and layout, and the synposes of most of Hammer's ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-11-18 Summary: The Haunted House That Hammer Built ... Alan Barnes and Marcus Hearn's THE HAMMER STORY is an exhaustive historical study of the horror films produced by Britain's Hammer Studios from the 1950s to the 1970s. For each film, the book offers a story synopsis, production history, and a discussion of critical and popular reaction. Also, the book includes a short history of the studio itself and information on those who helmed and shaped it over the years, and short biographies of some of the stars, screenwriters, and directors of various films are scattered throughout. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-07-21 Summary: Stylish Yet Incomplete Survey of Hammer ... First off, Titan Books should be commended for producing a very attractive, informative volume with lots of great photos concerning the history of Hammer Studios. The key films are discussed in depth, usually with two pages devoted to behind-the-scenes info regarding all your favorites. My one quibble would be with what the book isn't -- this is not a comprehensive survey of Hammer's entire output. The b&w thrillers are glossed over as are the comedies, the swashbucklers and the forgotten noirs. All well and good if ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-06-27 Summary: Long, Live Hammer Films ... This book has everything you would want to know about Hammer Studios, great artwork, wonderful summaries and much more. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Fifty years ago, Hammer Films released The Curse of Frankenstein. The now-legendary British company went on to make such classics as Dracula (and its many sequels), making international stars out of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, changing the face of horror cinema, and inspiring a generation of Hollywood filmmakers, including George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Now, for the first time, Hammer have given their active backing to an authorised history of the company, and have...more
